NDIS Information
Understanding the NDIS
The NDIS can feel overwhelming at first. Here's a plain-language guide to how it works, who is eligible, and how to get started — so you can focus on what matters most.
The basics
What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government program that provides funding to people with permanent and significant disabilities. It's designed to help you live more independently, participate in your community, and achieve your personal goals.
Unlike previous disability support systems, the NDIS is individualised — your plan is built around your specific goals and needs, not a one-size-fits-all package.
The NDIS is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). For more information, visit ndis.gov.au or call 1800 800 110.
Eligibility criteria
To access the NDIS, you generally need to meet all of the following:
Plan management
The three funding types
How your NDIS plan is managed affects which providers you can use. Mindfulcare Support works with plan-managed and self-managed participants only.
Self-managed
You manage your NDIS funds yourself. You have the most flexibility — you can choose any provider, including unregistered providers like Mindfulcare Support.
Plan-managed
A registered plan manager handles the financial side of your NDIS plan on your behalf. You still get choice of provider — including unregistered providers like Mindfulcare Support.
Agency-managed (NDIA)
The NDIA manages your funds directly. You can only use NDIS-registered providers. Mindfulcare Support is not registered, so I am unable to support agency-managed participants.
Step by step
How to get started with the NDIS
Check your eligibility
Visit the NDIS website or call 1800 800 110 to check whether you meet the eligibility criteria for the NDIS.
Apply for access
Submit an Access Request Form to the NDIS. You'll need supporting evidence from your treating health professionals about your disability and its impact on daily life.
Attend a planning meeting
Once approved, you'll have a planning meeting with an NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to discuss your goals and what supports you need.
Receive your NDIS plan
Your plan will outline your goals and the funding available for different support categories. You'll choose how your plan is managed — self, plan, or agency managed.
Choose your supports
With your plan in place, you can choose your providers. If you're plan-managed or self-managed, you can reach out to me at Mindfulcare Support to discuss how I can help.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What is a psychosocial disability?
A psychosocial disability arises from a mental health condition. It affects a person's ability to participate in everyday activities — things like managing daily tasks, maintaining relationships, or engaging with the community. Common conditions include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, anxiety disorders, and PTSD.
What is the difference between a support worker and a support coordinator?
A support worker (like me) provides direct, hands-on support to help you achieve your daily goals and build independence. A support coordinator helps you understand and implement your NDIS plan — connecting you with providers and navigating the system. Both can be funded through your NDIS plan.
Can I change providers if I'm not happy?
Yes. As a plan-managed or self-managed participant, you have the right to choose and change your providers at any time. You are not locked in to any provider.
What is the NDIS Code of Conduct?
The NDIS Code of Conduct sets out the standards of behaviour expected of all NDIS workers and providers. It covers things like acting with respect, providing safe and competent support, and maintaining privacy. I operate in strict accordance with the Code of Conduct.
How do I know if my goals are the right ones for my plan?
Most participants already have goals set in their plan before connecting with a support worker. My role is to work alongside you to achieve those existing goals and build your independence along the way.
What if I'm not sure whether I'm eligible?
The best first step is to call the NDIS on 1800 800 110 or visit ndis.gov.au. You can also speak with your GP or treating specialist, who can help gather the evidence needed for an access request. Feel free to reach out to me too — I'm happy to point you in the right direction.
Have more questions?
I'm happy to have a friendly, no-obligation chat about the NDIS, your plan, or how I can support you. Just reach out.
